Pattachitra is the traditional painting or art form from the eastern Indian states of Odisha. Pattachitra is one of the ancient artform of Odisha mainly practiced in Puri and Cuttack districts. The painting is heavily inspired by Lord Jagannath and Vaishnava culture. The painting is mostly in the form of stories and tells the stories about mythological tales and folk tales. The name Pattachitra is derived from the Sanskrit word “Patta” meaning ” canvas” and “Citra” meaning “painting” and is painted in a traditional way using colourful natural handmade paints.

This painting is based on fabric and uses colours from natural sources such as shells, black kohl, red lead (Harika stone used to obtain red colour), etc.

The artist who depicts the story is called Chitrakars.

History of Pattachitra – Pattachitra is believed to have originated as early as the 12th century and is one of the oldest and most famous living art forms. The people or pilgrims asked the artist to draw Lord Jagannath on wood so that they could take the god with them, and eventually they also asked for the drawing of other gods, which enabled the devotees to take their favourite god with them instead of carrying heavy statues.

How to make a Pattachitra canvas – The canvas is made in a very traditional way, by any artist at home. Nowadays, there are separate artist who make canvas for Pattachitra.
